OGX hails 'huge' Santos column

Brazilian independent OGX has struck a "huge hydrocarbon column" of good quality at a shallow-water wildcat in the Santos basin.
The company, led by Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, revealed on Monday that it has unearthed about 110 metres of net pay at the 1-OGX-63-SPS well in Block 57.
The well, formerly known as Fortaleza, has thrown up a hydrocarbon column of approximately 1000 metres in the Albian reservoirs, the Rio de Janeiro-based outfit revealed.
Exploration officer Paulo Mendoca commented: "This discovery is important for its huge hydrocarbon column and net pay identified in the Albian section, as well as by the quality of the Aptian reservoir and its behavior."
OGX's announcement continued: "The drilling of the well, which is still in progress, already reached the Aptian section of the reservoir identifying hydrocarbons through a high gas presence that resulted in a kick, which is already controlled."
Drilling of the well, situated in shallow water of about 155 metres some 102 kilometres off the state of Rio de Janeiro, continues with the Ocean Quest drilling rig. OGX has a 100% working interest in the well.
Upstream reported in early January that OGX is particularly interested in exploring the sandstone reservoirs of the Santonian section at the wildcat, after previous drill-stem tests carried out last year at the Natal and Maceio prospects, both located in adjacent Block BM-S-59, yielded excellent results.
The probe is targeting a final depth at around 6500 metres, much deeper than any other well drilled by OGX so far in the area, suggesting that the programme will try to potentially unlock the pre-salt riches in a shallower play than the wells drilled by Petrobras in water depths of more than 2000 metres in the Santos basin.
